The Infiltration of Mold in Buildings
According to the AIHA, an estimated 70% of homes currently have mold. Each year, almost 600,000 kids under the age of 5 die from illnesses caused by air pollution. The three most frequent indoor toxic molds are Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Cladosporium. There are over 900 species of slime mold in the world. This helps to explain the prevalence of mold-related illnesses and structural damage throughout the country. Structural damage and construction flaws can allow moisture to enter, this creates the opportunity for mold growth. Wet materials like wood, cellulose, and other organic building materials provide fertile conditions for mold. Rooms with high water usage, including laundry rooms, bathrooms, and kitchens, are also susceptible to mold growth.
Health Effects of Toxic Mold Exposure
Mold grows in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoor mold growth can lead to increased exposure and potential for health issues. Common health issues include respiratory issues such as chronic coughing, excessive sneezing, eye irritation, and persistent headaches. Prolonged exposure may cause everything from vomiting to even bleeding in the lungs. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, as well as individuals with weakened immune systems, allergies, asthma, and other breathing problems have a higher risk of experiencing complications.
