Independent Safety Monitor at Various Locations throughout New York

EnviroMed is currently involved in projects that provide Construction health and safety oversight, safety training, and creating and implementing OSHA safety programs. One of our clients is a utility contractor that is currently working in New York State redesigning and placing in new gas and steam lines. EnviroMed was called upon to make daily site visits and recommendations to prevent accidents and provide a safe working environment. The activities currently on the project are excavating trenches, working around overhead power lines, heavy construction equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, backhoes, site material drop-off, and welding. EnviroMed Services also created specific safety checklist that cover specific job activities and are specific to the OSHA regulations for trenching and shoring, personal protective equipment, storage of flammable and combustible materials, slips, trips and falls, welding, and site equipment.

As the site safety officer working directly for the contractor when a safety issue is noted it is brought immediately to the attention of the site foreman and abated. Such examples were to assure that shoring is installed prior to worker entering the trench, assure that access to the trench is safe and reliable. The entrance to the trench was a ladder so EnviroMed Services site representative made sure that the ladder was three feet above the entrance point, and had a ladder replaced when there was evidence of cracked side rails and bent ladder rungs. EnviroMed Services also made sure that proper monitoring was being conducted on site and had the trench constantly monitored for the presence of carbon monoxide, lower and upper gas explosion limits, oxygen, and hydrogen sulfide.

In slips, trips and falls EnviroMed Services made electrical cords covered over with the protective rubber covers to prevent tripping and falls, we assured that all alarms and lights were properly functioning on heavy equipment, we assured that when construction vehicles were being used that the contractor had a spotter to assure that no blind spots were missed.

EnviroMed Services also assured that first aid kits were available on site, material safety data sheets, fire extinguishers were on site and properly inspected and signed off, we checked for calibration dates on hazardous atmospheres detectors, we checked the reliability of ladders, we assured that workers were wearing the proper personal protective equipment at all times while on the job. EnviroMed Services safety checklist for this particular project covered the following OSHA Regulations:

    • Hazard Communication 1926.59
    • Excavations 1926.650, 651, 652
    • PPE and life saving equipment 1926.95,96,100,202
