EnviroMed has performed OSHA Audits on the daily work activities conducted by the employees while being accompanied by department heads to each activity and work site. EnviroMed took notes, made observations, and recommended improvements on safety when conducting work activities.
The activities included excavation and trenching, the use of jackhammers, saws, demolition saws, chainsaws, construction equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, and vacuum trucks used to clean out manholes, confined space entry, an audit of the MSDS Sheets, how combustible and flammable materials are stored, electrical safety, fall protection, fire safety when welding or cutting into metal that creates hot slag, lockout tagout, respiratory protection use, hearing protection, and hazard communication.
During the field visits EnviroMed recommended the use of machine guarding on all rotary equipment and recommended that no machine guards be removed from rotating devices and equipment.
EnviroMed observed compressed gas tanks used to cut steel that were not tied off, laid on their side, and had no protective gage cap when moved. The tanks would be rolled to the work activity instead of being carted and tied during transportation. With EnviroMed’s recommendation this activity stopped.
The workers while using the vacuum truck were not wearing hearing protection so EnviroMed with the use of a dosimeter measured the noise level when the vacuum truck was being operated and measured the noise level at 100dBa. This immediately put into action the use of hearing protection by employees when around the vacuum truck.
EnviroMed also inspected lanyards and fall protection devices used by the employees to assure that the lanyard and all its devices were not damaged.
EnviroMed also observed trenching and shoring activities. EnviroMed did observe that employees were using the proper personal protection while working in a trench greater than five feet deep. This included two ways of entering and exiting the trench and workers working inside the steel trench box. Air monitoring was also being conducted by using a 4-Gas Meter that read oxygen level, lower explosive limit, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide.
During EnviroMed Services OSHA Safety Audit it was observed that the City of Danbury did not have written programs and procedures for their employees, which in turn is an OSHA violation. Therefore, EnviroMed Services wrote the following programs, and were reviewed by the City of Danbury Department Heads and accepted with no comment or corrections made.
